We splashed out and bought this portable gas oven at the height of the pandemic as we simply didn't know how bad it was going to get and wanted a back-up cooking source if there was a disruption to the electric supply meaning our normal oven would be useless. It was a tad expensive, coming in at over £200 BUT a week after we took delivery, our main oven went kaput and it took a fortnight to get a replacement heater element fitted, so it saved a small fortune on takeaways. Then the power cuts started and again we turned to what by then was a trusty friend.
The portable gas heater, which of course is also ideal for camping, has about the same capacity as a normal microwave with inner dimensions of 32cm x 32cm x 26.5cm (WxDxH). It weighs 8.5 kilograms and comes complete with a baking tray, 2 x grill rack and even a carry bag! It runs off handy butane gas cylinders (see below) which are interchangeable with our other off-grid resources.
So, what it it like to use? Bit of a disaster the first few times because like any new oven, you have to get used to it. Sure it has a dial to control the flame, but not actual markings to determine the heat being generated (incidentally it reaches uo to 270 degrees and has a useful required timer function so you don't leave it on by accident.) Then lo! After a few less than impressive meals, we got it just right and now it turns out food just as we would want it. We've actually been using it through the energy price hikes as it's significantly cheaper to use than our main electric oven and the meals are just as good, though oven chips aren't. Everything else, from roasts etc is perfect, although there is no grill function. Would be buy another if this sturdy little oven breaks down at some point in the distant future? Absolutely as we like our food and this device makes sure we always have it hot!
