Living Off-Grid Videos

 

The cost of living crisis inspired one family to attempt to live off-grid in the UK, something normally assocaiated with north America and other remote parts of the word where 'normal' services are yet to reach. We tried it in a remote rural area of Uganda, having built a home half-way up a mountain in a village that didn't get electricity until 1996 and, before our arrival, most of the vilagers had never seen a television ~ and it's great! In fact we learned so much (and still visit) we've slashed our UK power bills ti under £2.00 a day including standing charges.

This family sold their bungalow and embarked on a new way of living, off-grid. They strated in a caravan while they developed their new lifestyle, depending on a generator for power and a wood burner for heating - and all this in the middle of winter! They then embarked on a drainage and filtration system to collect rainwater but struggled with food storage having no fridge or freezer.

Solar panels came next, taking months to build and install before finally having full-time power. Next came food production and next on the list is to move out of the caravan into a self-built house. Of course, no-one is saying you should go as far as this family, but small changes can help move towards a more self-reliant lifestyle.
